The first six episodes concentrate on establishing the setting by showing off the structural intricacies of the three-school arrangement and Strawberry Hall (the main boarding hall and source of the series' name), primarily through an emphasis on transfer student Aoi, who regards her roommate's fascination with her with tolerant uncertainty but finds herself overwhelmed by Étoile. Episodes 1-3 and 6 spend a lot of time establishing this potential relationship, while episode 4 shifts the focus entirely to a secondary character's infatuation with a boyish equestrian team star and episode 5 more concerns establishing Chiyo as the roomkeeper for Aoi and Tamao, with not a single appearance by Étoile. This span of episodes also firmly establishes that something is decidedly off with Étoile, who despite being the most beloved student on all three campuses has a reputation for shirking responsibilities in meetings and toying with the hearts of girls who catch her eye. Whether or not Aoi represents something different to her, and exactly what mysteries lie behind her behavior, are the closest things to major plot points offered in this volume.

Original creator Sakurako Kimono, whose other prominent creation is Sister Princess, apparently decided that if one stylish school uniform theme was good then three would be even better. The old-fashioned European-styled formal black dresses worn by Miator students, with their distinctly Japanese cutesy tweaks, providing a strikingly different visual look for costuming, but those who prefer traditional schoolgirl outfits can also find them in Le Rim's checkered skirts, while the sweaters and female business suit-styled outfits of Spica students provide further variety. The series also goes to great lengths to visually distinguish all the girls from each other, even down to the most minor characters, with mixed results. As befitting the star student she is supposed to be (her title is French for “star”), Étoile has the most glamorous look with the fullest head of hair, while designs for the rest of the girls fall into typical anime visual stereotypes for cute middle school and high school girls. Weak animation drags down the otherwise-respectable artistry, however, with a heavy dependence on still shots and use of minimal animation wherever possible.

Given that anime's mainstream notoriety years back was derived from violence, it's ironic that bloodbaths like Hellsing are something of a rarity on the market now. But even by the standards of bloodbaths past, Hellsing is something special: stylish, virtually fetishistic, and definitely not for the weak of stomach. The second half of this episode is almost non-stop carnage, a veritable montage of crunching bones, dismemberment, beheading, disemboweling and even impaling (a particularly nice touch recalling the origin of the Dracula myth). The series fairly embraces the anti- in anti-hero, not shying away from the collateral damage inflicted during vampire-on-vampire duels, and forcefully reminding us with the deliberately unpleasant SWAT sequences that Alucard is indeed a true monster (as several characters say aloud throughout the course of the episode).

This third installment brings viewers, finally, to the point where this adaptation and the original TV adaptation go their separate ways forever. Other than the opening confrontation in the museum between Integra and Maxwell of Iscariot, nothing in this episode has been animated before. That means the introduction of neglected favorites from the manga like Bernadotte/Vernedad and the chubby, weirdly cool Major. And the inclusion of Nazis (Nazis!). It also means that there is no need (or way) to directly compare Ultimate with Gonzo's television adaptation. Though the retention of original manga artist Kouta Hirano's peculiarly angular designs and the lovingly detailed animation of his outrageous, distorted action scenes and anally accurate military hardware give Ultimate an edge, the results of running scene-by-scene comparisons in one's head weren't always positive. Hellsing Ultimate director Tomokazu Tokoro (best known for Haibane Renmei of all things) has had to grow into his role as an action director, and his renditions of action scenes often suffered in comparison to the fast-cutting maximum cool of the TV series and its slinky subliminal rock soundtrack. But he is growing into the role, as becomes gratifyingly obvious once the comparisons stop. The visceral impact of this episode's final half is absolutely undeniable and he wields his thundering gothic score and its short bursts of pure rock with a solid competence that occasionally borders on excellence. Pine for the loss of Kouji Ishii's creepy rock 'n' roll whispers all you want, but like any relationship eventually you just have to get over it. Pedestrian it may be in comparison, but Hayato Matsuo's soundtrack is full-blooded and stirring when evaluated on its own merits.

As one might expect from a cast and crew that have been breathing Bleach for God knows how long, Viz's English version of the film is as near to unassailable as adaptations get. The script makes the tricky business of balancing the need to be true to the original with the need to forge an identity of its own look easy, keeping the dialogue as natural as possible while sticking as close to the original meaning as it can. Gina Bowes pegs Senna's abundance of devil-may-care attitude, Bob Johnson is appropriately sepulchral as arch-villain Genryusai, and the remainder of the cast has lived long enough with their characters to be able to sleepwalk their way through the film.

With two discs and a booklet, the extra material covers a lot of ground. There's an energetic feature-length commentary featuring most of the primary cast (who naturally lose steam as they go), an informative though pedestrian interview with the Japanese staff, and an exhaustive behind-the-scenes look at Viz's Bleach empire that features a rare look at the manga side of the business and an awesome live-action rendering of the first-season opening, starring the film's English cast. There's also some production artwork, trailers enough to choke an advertising executive, and the aforementioned booklet, which overflows with pretty art and redundant information.

It's no The Castle of Cagliostro, or even a Yu Yu Hakusho The Movie: Poltergeist Report (the film that is the standard by which disposable side-stories should be judged), but Memories of Nobody is nevertheless a dependably entertaining, periodically involving adventure. Sure you have to be fan of Bleach to enjoy it, but if you aren't already then you're probably not reading this.

If that sounded a little defensive, that's because there is good reason to be. After seven volumes and nearly as many years, and as loath as its fans (myself included) may be to admit it, Yotsuba&! is starting to wear out its welcome. We know the series has bigger themes to fry than adventures in souvenir-delivering and house-sitting. Several questions have been begging to be asked for eons now: Who is Yotsuba? Why is Koiwai raising her? And why is he so darned oblivious to the opposite sex? This volume skirts around the edges of a couple of the questions, including a cute bit where Fuuka's classmates briefly mistake Koiwai for her guy, and brushes up against a bit of adult-ish business involving Jumbo's unfortunate crush on Asagi, but it steadfastly refuses to address anything more important than, say a cake shortage directly. It's a dance we've seen before and, frankly, after 1600 pages it should have finished, gotten married, had a few kids and retired. It is fine to deal with larger issues piecemeal in the background, but Yotsuba&! has pushed them so far back they aren't even in the background; they're off the stage altogether.

I remember reading a foreword, written by Charles Schultz for some Calvin & Hobbes collection or another. In it Schultz praised Bill Watterson's artistic splashes of water and Calvin's dinner-roll shoes. "Bill's art is fun to look at," he said, or something to that effect. "Comics are a visual art; people forget how important it is that they be fun to look at." At the time I thought it was faint praise. Not any longer. Kiyohiko Azuma's art is also fun to look at. Yotsuba's unromanticized childishness and the adeptness with which he filters the world through her eyes indicate genuine writing chops, and his skill with combining innocence and working humor is nothing short of unnatural, but the true reason Yotsuba&! functions as a graphic novel fountain of youth, despite its own advanced years? Kiyohiko Azuma's art is fun to look at. He draws simple but hilariously accurate expressions, instantly likeable people with instantly visible personalities, detailed and pertinent settings, and of course nigh-on perfect sight gags. And he can take all of those fun drawings and sequence them, expanding time and space to evoke with startling accuracy feelings not felt since childhood—the fierce joy of braving a rainstorm, the new world seen from atop an adult's shoulders—as well as some never felt at all (the float episode is the closest many of us will ever get to participating in a festival).

What is there to say about Ikki Tousen that doesn't involve snide comments about breasts and pantyshots? This train wreck of a series finally comes to a crashing halt in Vol. 4, culminating in a flurry of exaggerated fights and school uniforms that explode on contact. The storyline clings to its feeble Three Kingdoms premise right up until the end, where it's then thrown away in one of the most anticlimactic endings to ever close out a fighting series. But it's not like anyone was following this for the story, right? When it comes to high kicks, mindless bloodshed, and provocatively exposed body parts, Ikki Tousen is the place to be.

As a history lesson on the Three Kingdoms, Ikki Tousen fails badly—not that it was supposed to teach anyone about that tumultuous period of Chinese history, anyway. Take away the historical connection and the show remains essentially the same: a series of fights where the opponents keep getting tougher and the girls' clothing keeps getting smaller. With each character corresponding to an important warrior or politician, the Three Kingdoms parallel exists as a crutch to determine the next matchup, eliminating the need for an original plot. However, when people start defying ancient prophecies, that's when things get screwy, and Hakufu's final battle turns out to be... a complete waste of time. As far as endings go, this one fizzles out so badly that you might want to chain down your furniture to avoid throwing things at the screen. Although things do get resolved, it's such a lame way of getting there that they should have just stuck with rampant fanservice all the way to the credits.

Kia Asamiya, until this year, hasn't really been very well-known in the American anime fandom circles. This year, with Viz publishing Steam Detectives in Animerica Extra and Silent Möbius seperately, ADV releasing Nadesico, and CPM Manga printing the Nadesico manga, the veteran manga-ka has developed quite a large following within a short period of time. And deservedly so! Asamiya is wonderfully diverse in his storytelling abilities... and Compiler is a great chance to show his whimsical side.

Compiler and Assembler are from... uh... the computer world (?) and upon coming into the 3-D world, the two end up sharing a house with two brothers who somehow hold some key to... well... Okay, so none of this is really explained-- it's not important. The result is, Compiler and Assembler are living with these two guys, Assembler is having an on/off flirting affair with high school-aged Toshi while Compiler is too cold to admit that she really does have a thing for mega-playboy office worker Nachi.

For all the serious content in these episodes, though, the series never forsakes its sense of humor for long. The comic relief is not as frequent as in the first volume, but the writing does occasionally fire off a good one (the “old bastard” joke at the end of episode 7 and Ryuki's dream in episode 8 particularly stand out) and maintain existing humorous character quirks, such as Koyu's incredibly poor sense of direction, the temperamental nature Shurei hides beneath her outward sensibility, and the occasionally silly behavior of some characters, especially Ryuki. One aspect of what makes the Finance Minister Kirin Kou a “weirdo” is also good for a laugh or two.

The cover art for volume 2 may eschew the pink background that so defined the first volume, but it only reinforces a notion established by the first volume: this series has some of the prettiest character designs in recent memory, as well as great use of period costuming. Though never garish, the colors are so vivid that they breathe a degree of life into the visuals that even well-made anime series do not commonly achieve, and the background art effectively establishes the setting. The animation may not impress as much, but overall Madhouse Studios has turned in another strong visual effort here.

As with the first volume, extras are minimal, including only a clean closer and company previews in the regular edition. The original Japanese opener and closer are retained, however, with the English credits provided separately at the end of episode 8.

The second volume of Scrapped Princess continues to deliver one of the best fantasy stories currently available in the American market. It carries the plot and character development along well, delivering occasional bits of action and humor but mostly concentrating on convincingly telling its story. It is an engrossing and highly entertaining title whose minimal use of common anime conventions should make it very accessible even to those who don't normally watch anime. If you like the first volume, you'll love this one.

SIDE NOTE: After my review of the first volume, the curious naming conventions of the series were pointed out to me. For your amusement, note how many characters in the series have names that are partly or completely derived from the names of guns. (Winia Chester = Winchester, Casull, Armalite, etc.)

"VS," a series of theatrical screenings for Bandai Visual's latest original video anime (OVA) projects, has revealed that the staff and cast for the original short OVA project Norageki! Bandai Visual had already revealed the existence and premiere date (January 22, 2011) of this prison escape story in September.

In any series, when a sequel is made, it is important to keep continuity between the original and the sequel, especially in the characters' personalities. In Bubblegum Crash the characters' personalities have changed; they aren't the same people they were two years earlier. This is perhaps the one of the biggest flaws in Crash, especially to a BGC fan (and notably the same complaint many fans have with the 2040 series). The largest changes were made to Priss and Sylia. Sylia is much less ruthless than she was in Crisis, as she has become a kinder, warmer person. Priss is a much calmer person in Crash. In Crisis she was full of rage; rage that she vented in combat, in her music and in her interaction with the other Knight Sabers. While calmer, she definitely isn't nicer; she's become a cold bitch with little devotion to the Knight Sabers. Additionally, she suddenly hates Boomers. In Crisis she may have been the most violent towards them, leading many people to believe she hated them, but she never spoke badly of them. Yet in Crash she hates them with a passion. Nene seems to have grown up a bit, but while she is more mature, she has become a much less independent person. Linna too has changed; the Linna of 2032 was a person who was comfortable with her life, happy with her job, she valued the Knight Sabers as both her friends and her real occupation. Like Priss, Linna has lost her devotion to the Knight Sabers and become much more interested in the money she is making in her new profession as a stockbroker.

The Nico Nico Live Hōsō program has announced on Friday that production on an Blessing of the Campanella OAV (original video anime) has been green-lit. (The program is available after the live streaming to Nico Nico Douga premium subscribers.) Director Shinji Ushiro and voice actress Asami Imai (Chelsea) were special guests of Friday's Nico Nico Live Hōsō program. The 12th and final television episode aired earlier this month.

The star of SuperGALS!, Ran Kotobuki would probably have one thing to say to you about this volume: "Never break a girl's heart." With a title like that, viewers may be a bit confused about what this series has to offer, and the pretty pink box included with volume one of the series probably leaves most males wondering what they're getting into. What they'll get when they pick up this series is a fun show about three girls shopping in the streets of Shibuya. To be more precise, what they get is a wild slice of life series filled with gal-speak, fashionable outfits and a outrageous comedy. SuperGALS! is much more than an average shoujo story: there's a fun script, out of this world characters and even a bit of drama mixed in to entertain all comers.

Building off the intro in the first volume, volume two packs five more episodes of Super GAL mayhem. Extras include culture notes in the form of an insert, textless opening and closing animations, the standard array of ADV previews and a mini-poster featuring one of the gals. With its hip soundtrack and para para beats, the English soundtrack takes on a wild streak behind the lead of Luci Christian in the role of Ran Kotobuki. Luci puts a lot of attitude into this role, allowing Ran to be one of the most memorable anime characters seen in a while. The rest of the cast follows suit with great performances from Chris Patton, Greg Ayres and Jason Douglas. The entire cast puts a lot of heart into their performances enhancing the high energy already present in the show.

Even the side-story episodes are ambitious in their own way, like the mind-bending "Coupling with with with with," which presents the events of a single day from four different points of view and leaves the plot for the viewer to figure out. Granted, it's no Kurosawa masterpiece—episodes like this are mostly just lightweight distractions from Keima's principal quest. Overall, though, there are no bad episodes—maybe just flawed ones, like the early part of book-lover Shiori's arc, which takes too long to develop (although it does redeem itself with an incredible climactic sequence). If there is one aesthetic that guides the series through its many moods, it's an overriding flair for the dramatic; even the throwaway finale where Keima catches up on his gaming backlog is presented as some kind of Olympian feat.

Part of what makes this dramatic flair possible is the animation, which does not cut corners like so many dating-sim adaptations do, but shows expressiveness and fluidity no matter what the situation. Whether it's something as ridiculous as Keima extolling the virtues of 2-D girls, or something as riveting as Kanon taking the stage before a sold-out stadium, every scene is framed for maximum visual impact—even if that means having to draw things the hard way (hundreds of lightsticks for the concert scene) or managing all the in-between frames for rapid-fire comedy outtakes. A varied color palette also makes each of the different storylines stand out, from the afternoon-to-sunset-to-evening shift in the first episode to the muted tones of Shiori's library in the final arc. And while some may call out the character designs for their stereotypical looks, it's actually part of the series' satirical nature, with Keima pointing out the "traditional" features that are expected of dating-sim heroines. As they say, the better you know the source material, the more effective the parody.

Like the two previous Precure All-Stars DX magical girl films, the new film will combine the casts of all the Pretty Cure (Precure) television series to date. This 10th Precure film will open in Japan on March 19, 2011; the ninth film, Heartcatch Precure! Hana no To de Fashion Show... desuka!?

On the whole, the first few episodes of Tactics just fail to adequately come together. Characters are not sufficiently defined or established, the plotting lacks originality and cohesiveness, and it has trouble finding a proper comic/dramatic balance. While the series does improve a bit as it progresses and offers a few good points, it's not enough for this one to be worthy of a recommendation.

The relentlessly cheerful mood of Bottle Fairy would not be complete without a palette of warm pastel colors. But don't confuse this with the garish look of actual children's shows, or the shine and sparkle of conventional magical girl series. Sharp highlights and shadows, simple backgrounds, and those fake halftone dots give it a style all its own. Lapses into the fairies' dreamworld also mix effortlessly with the real world, like when Sarara has her samurai and bushido fantasies, or Chiriri wonders about the week when everything turns gold. The cleverest touch is when human-sized items coexist with fairy-sized items, creating an amusing disparity of scale.

Big-eyed, super-deformed character designs also add to that overpowering essence of cute; watch closely enough and you'll even see that there are varying degrees of super-deformedness. It goes too far sometimes, though, like with the pedo-licious swimsuits in the August episode (the fairies even pose innocently for the camera as it pans up their curveless bodies—yikes). And if you needed further confirmation that this is a male-targeted show, just wait for the sequence with the maid and waitress outfits. Despite such wanton acts of fanservice and the simple art style, however, the animation itself rarely gets choppy, and it even ramps up to high-speed when the comedy bits call for it.

Unlike Skip Beat!, that is much more about the business of celebrity in early volumes than it is about burgeoning relationships between man and woman, Honey Hunt is clearly all about the perverse love triangles. The two potential romantic partners for Yura in question are twin brothers Q-ta and Haruka. The former seems easygoing and eager to please, and when he finds out Yura's father is a famous composer, he proposes to her on the spot in order to become the man's son in law. If you cannot achieve success on your own terms, it is, from Q-ta's point of view, an entirely legitimate exercise to try marrying into it! That probably says a lot about his personality. Haruka, on the other hand, has nothing but contempt for Yura in the beginning; she does not look like she has what it takes in his opinion. But when he meets her in the context of work—all three will be collaborating on the same project, who woulda thunk it?!—he tempers his abrasiveness a bit. For now, neither of them fascinates, but if Aihara is true to form, both brothers will eventually prove to be total creeps.

As always, Aihara's artwork (in its latter-day incarnation) is the primary source of reader pleasure. She has a clean, yet reasonably detailed style of line work that is both easy on the eyes yet not so minimalist that you feel like the artist is trying to cheat you out of a fully-imagined sequential art world. Her character designs are always especially appealing. She draws a good range of facial expressions, from the silly to the sexy. Female fans tend to go especially gah-gah over her male characters, even when their only redeeming personal features are their pretty faces.

Anyway, Honey Hunt is an appealing, diverting romp through the trials and travails of show business and teenage romance…but you would still be better off sticking to Skip Beat! and calling it a day.

A good deal of what made Kaleido Star's first season such fun was the way it upset Sora's life and shunted off in new directions every couple of episodes. Season two has little of that restlessness. The change is not felicitous; at least not at first.

Rather than Sora overcoming a wild procession of escalating trials, season two begins with Sora festering slowly in place as uncertainty and doubt eat their way into her and she bows beneath the abuse heaped on her by May and Leon. It's unpleasant stuff, and not necessarily in a good way. May and Leon have their reasons for behaving as they do, but they don't really come into play until the second half, leaving the first half one big slice of sadism during which they inexplicably dump on Sora while she and the series steadfastly refuse to take them to task for it—a fact that rankles far more than any of their selfish, insensitive or cruel acts. As Sora, and by extension the series, drifts aimlessly in a morass of angst, the episodes begin to blend one into the other and Sora's losing acrobat battles, along with the sadly outgunned comic interludes, grow increasingly interchangeable. It's a dark, muddy and frustrating stretch of episodes, as much for the way it paints Sora as a passive victim as for its angsty tone and torpid plotting.

But it also serves a definite purpose. Kaleido Star's second season is basically a 25-episode version of one of the first season's brisk three-episode arcs. Their customary ploy was to establish an obstacle and have Sora agonize about it and then overcome it with raw spunk, and that's exactly what this season does, only in extended form. That makes the opening half the "agonize" portion of the plot, and a necessary evil in laying the groundwork for the spunky portion. That doesn't entirely excuse it. Whatever its reasons, the fact still remains that it reduced Sora to a weak-willed loser for ten-plus episodes. And dragging out the dark portion of the plot over an entire half-season exposes a lot of shortcomings that would have been better off smothered under sheets of feel-good fun. Things like the formulaic cycling of heavy and comic scenes, or the series' habit of hammering its points home with unnecessary force, or May and Sora's embarrassingly overplayed rivalry. Later, even after the series enters the spunk phase, you still notice them, which dampens a good many fine scenes.

Dampens—not ruins. When Sora regains her bearings (when and how would be unfair to give away), it's as if the series has regained them with her. There were signs of life before—Sora venting at Leon in a rare display of ire; the return of Yuri, vastly altered by Sora's influence—but the series really takes off only when its lead does. With Sora smashing through barriers and straightening out twisted personalities in that indomitably kindhearted way of hers, it's just like being back in season one. Which is to say: lots of fun. The goofy humor is funny again. The acrobat showdowns are exciting, and the character growth explosive and hugely satisfying. There's really no describing how fulfilling it is to see an increasingly desperate May laid low by Sora's newfound determination, and subsequently elevated by her example. Or what a relief it is when the first cracks show in Leon's implacable facade and Sora unconsciously worms her way into them. That the changes are psychologically sound is just gravy.

Reinvigorated, the series fills its last leg with marvelous scenes. The first half is certainly technically accomplished, particularly in its attention to details of physique and human movement (essential in a show about acrobats), but aside from the mid-season climax (highlighted by the sight of Sora in mid-flight amid a comet's tail of tears) nothing particularly sticks in the mind. In no small part because it's hard to enjoy the visuals when you are overcome with a desire to slap the heroine. The second half, on the other hand, is an embarrassment of memorable moments.

Some are modest. May's first conflict with the real Sora takes place almost exclusively in their eyes. But most are downright opulent. From an impromptu acrobatics show in the midst of a bank robbery to Sora communing with seagulls as she soars behind a speeding boat, the final episodes are crammed with ambitious, extravagant set-pieces. And none are more ambitious, or more extravagant than its finale. There's a good deal of corn in the final scenes, but they are so wondrously, mind-blowingly beautiful that you hardly notice. Like the legendary great maneuver, the Angel's Maneuver lives up to its name: it's heavenly. Even now, with nearly a decade of animation advances under our belts, the sequence awes.

Kaleido Star's English dub has been around for most of that decade as well. Fans have had that long to familiarize themselves with its slight over-enunciation, with the weak links in its cast (mostly the accents adopted for characters like Sarah, Leon, and to a lesser extent Yuri, though Ken remains problematic as well), and with its overall serviceability and general inferiority to the original (the gap in dubbing experience really shows). Likewise the extras, including the two stolid commentary tracks, during which Illich Guardiola (Yuri) and Mike MacRae (Leon) discuss their respective accents, are relics from the original ADV releases. The only thing, really, for Kaleido veterans to get excited about are the OVAs.

Of course, customers holding out for this box set are fully aware of the plusses and minuses of the English adaptation and of the series itself. The real question, rather, is Viz's treatment of the series. The box itself is an attractive, compact affair, with its five discs held in a faux book with five plastic “pages,” each backed with sturdy cardboard emblazoned with a fine portrait of one of the major players. Extras, on the other hand, are something of a disappointment. There's a substantial poster of Ichigo, and the behind-the-scenes feature—twenty minutes of interviews with and in-the-booth footage of the English main cast—is quite welcome, but other than that it's standard stuff: reams of production art, and clean opening and closing animation. Except that there is no clean version of the second opening, and only four of third closer's thirteen (count 'em, thirteen) unique ending animations are provided with clean versions.

Viz's solidly acted, meticulously casted, faithfully scripted, and smoothly delivered dub is a testament to how far the company has come since the lackluster days of Ranma ½, the debacle of Maison Ikkoku, and even the rocky opening of Bleach itself. There are of course departures from the original—Ganju is more serious, Yoruichi loses his distinctive speech pattern—but they have minimal impact, and with Rukia playing damsel in distress the entire time, her variances in personality (or lack thereof) are no longer an issue. As always, nitpickers will find plenty of reasons to be displeased—it is after all, different from the original, eek!—but it has grown into a fine alternative to the original, one that delivers all (or most—it occasionally flubs the comic intent of the next-episode previews) of the original's charms. Special mention among the new arrivals goes to David Lodge for the rumbling ferocity of his Kenpachi.

Though humor does find its way into Shiro Sagisu's score, bouncing fun isn't what it's most memorable for. Rather, it's how Abe spices the fights with liberal (and smartly-deployed) doses of Sagisu's rocking guitars that lingers. Ichigo's blazing guitar theme in particular has evolved into a full-blown rock anthem about (quite literally) how great it is to be an ass-kicking hero—to be deployed whenever he makes his inevitable last-minute entrance. It's a strategy that would seem cheap were the winding of tensions preceding his entrance not so damnably effective, making his flashy heroics, and their musical prelude, somehow unutterably satisfying. The remainder of the soundtrack is a mix of subliminal muttering, atonal guitar, and industrial noise that underlines the series' supernatural overtones, along with two opening and three ending themes. UVERworld's propulsive opening succeeds the uber-popular Orange Range with grace, while the second closer introduces viewers to Home Made Kazoku, originators of Eureka Seven's superb second opener. The other two closers are eminently enjoyable but standard pop tunes.

But the series has no intention of allowing its continually growing world or plot to distract from its true purpose: to be really, really cool. Terminally hip wardrobes are the norm, even the bizarre humor (pig-riding gangsters anyone?) is strangely becoming, and the shifting fight structure (moving away from vile villains to all-powerful arch-rivals) is fine-tuned to maximize each character's cool-posing impact. The balance of each fight still tilts heavily towards predictability, though the shift in structure does heighten tension and even occasionally (shock!) surprises. But heck, what is predictability when arrayed against cheer-from-the-stands coolness? Director Noriyuki Abe and manga-ka Tite Kubo don't release their stranglehold on rough-edged coolness, even as the budget of the series gets a noticeable second-season boost and it begins dabbling in the kind of attenuated fight structures that have derailed many a lesser series. The inclusion of spinning cameras and slick slo-mo has in no way lessened Abe's impeccable action timing, impaired his edgy editing, or blinded his eye for how to use Kubo's rangy, punk-tough character designs, and he keeps the multiple-episode fights moving at a hopping pace. Not even the endless Soul Reaper terminology or the discussions of the number, purpose, leaders and fighting strength of Soul Reaper teams can bog down the series' driving, muscular progression from showdown to showdown. They do however flesh out Bleach's world and throw out the first signs of a serious—and intricate—overarching plot.

Forget that Viz's definition of a season doesn't tally with the original Japanese season breaks: nestled in between two of the series' obligatory training sequences, this twenty-one-episode box set is an unsullied slice of Bleach at its skull-cracking, sword-fightin', shounen-action-cool best. Opening with Ichigo and his crew's entry into the Soul Society, the box set begins with the series on the cusp of a deepening of its world, and follows it straight through an unrelenting procession of fights and the careful unfolding of a new and complex world, culminating in the inevitable cliffhanger that simply screams for the follow-up episode. If the previous twenty episodes felt like a prelude, then this is what they were building to—the Kenpachi fight ranks among the best in the genre, and the promise of much, much more to come hangs ripe over the entire course of the set.

Pioneer's release of fan-favorite robot girl series Chobits continues with volume two, and unfortunately, if you're waiting for the show to get an arching, meaningful storyline, you've got another disc or so to go before that's gonna happen. The screenwriters drop a few crumbs on this disc as to what's really going on, but it's going to take another five or six episodes before they give you the whole sandwich. That said, the episodes on this disc are mildly entertaining and mostly inoffensive, so for diehard fans of the show, there's a lot here to like.

If you aren't a diehard, though, these episodes may strike you as being more of the same salacious crapola that infests the first half of this show. You'd be right, for the most part. Chi is sexualized in these episodes more than in any other portion of the show, and it's a shame, since the show does eventually become worthwhile. Surely, this section of the series undoubtedly turned a lot of people away from the show. It's easy to dismiss Chobits as misogynistic fanboy-centric garbage, and indeed, these episodes certainly seem to be just that. For the patient (or undemanding) among you, if you can survive this disc, you'll be treated to what becomes a marvelous animated essay on man's love affair and fetishization of technology.

As for the episodes included on this disc, they're amusing in their own empty way. Chi continues to wander around in a daze, exploring modern-day Japan and mugging for the camera (in a completely blank fashion. Thank you, Neon Genesis Evangelion, for making "emotionless construct" a popular character type). Hideki remains a wholly introspective and totally inept male lead. We are provided with his inner monologue, which makes Hideki a vastly more sympathetic character than any of his "pathetic ronin" counterparts (Keitaro Urashima, I'm looking at you.). When CLAMP does something, they usually do it right, and they've managed to solve the problems created by having a doormat male lead by actually providing us with his motivations, hopes and fears. We never really knew why Keitaro was such a loser; but we know why Hideki is, and at least he tries to do something about it. That's an admirable quality of Chobits that we should hope other series of this type emulate in the future.

Of course, the problematic episode on the disc is episode seven, titled "Chi Works." Chi is caught by a guy running a peepshow and is suckered in to nearly stripping for a series of cameras. The episode ends on a total cliffhanger after a flash of light bursts forth from Chi's "power source" (read: symbol of virginity) when the creepy peepshow guy tries to touch her. Other than not-so-subtle suggesting that the show has a theme about "good" girls waiting to find true love before giving up their "purity" (cough), this episode serves very little purpose other than to fulfill the fantasy many fanboys obviously have.

As usual, the animation is excellent, having been done by Studio Madhouse, who also animated Card Captor Sakura and X TV with amazing success. The music is cute and passable, and the opening theme remains catchy. The dub is actually not horrible, which is amazing, considering how difficult this series must have been to dub. Crispin Freeman pulls off the excitable and nearly manic Hideki with grace. The actress portraying Chi does an admirable job, despite having been given almost nothing to work with (the character speaks in a monotone and rarely says more than one word at a time.) The cursory characters, including Shinbo and Sumomo, his hyperactive persocom, are pulled off amazingly well. Little girls and teenage females are never, ever done convincingly in English dubs, but they managed to pull it off here. My sole complaint is that Yumi has "generic English dub girl" sound, but Yumi is a generic anime girl, so I suppose the voice is fitting.

Fourteen years ago, an apocalyptic event called Eden's Hammer flooded most of the world, killing 6 billion people. So don't be fooled by the cutesy title and saccharine character names—Sugar Sugar Rune is a magical fantasy as engaging as any of the more serious works out there. Unfortunately, this volume doesn't quite match the ambitions set forth by the previous one, so be prepared to sit back for a bit and watch Chocolat fending off Vanilla's challenges while the Ogres prepare their plans for world domination. Still, the personal issues and moral ambiguities in this fantasy world offer more to think about than just sparkly magic and young romance. As long as two best friends remain torn by desires and allegiances, the potential for conflict will keep this series going strong.

A back-of-the-book glossary comes in very useful for this manga, as various names and spells are given in French throughout the story. To add to the multiculturalism, other concepts from pagan magic are also explained in the back. Simple dialogue and a straightforward translation make for quick reading (this is, after all, a children's series), while Japanese sound effects are left alone and small translations provided alongside them. Sharp print quality and solid binding represent Del Rey's typical high standards, although a couple of marker illustrations come out blurry after being grayscaled.

Although the artwork is a pure explosion of shoujo mannerisms, Moyoco Anno's distinctive touches set it apart from other look-alikes and wannabes. Anything her peers can do, Anno does more of: bigger eyes, brighter sparkles, fancier panel borders—there's no mistaking it for anything else, and these excesses turn out to be a stylistic advantage. However, the "more is more" approach also leads to messy layouts, and those who aren't accustomed to the sprawling visuals—every square inch filled with drawing or toning or patterns—will have a tricky time reading this. If you should get lost trying to follow the story, just enjoy the attractive character designs: dashing men, gorgeous women, and adorable schoolchildren all add to the charm of the series, from their striking faces to outfits that blend fantasy with high fashion.

Still riding high on the momentum of the previous installment, Volume 4 opens with a face-to-face confrontation between the Magical World and the Ogres. This isn't just a good-versus-evil Harry Potter deal, though—Chocolat's attachment to both Pierre and Vanilla give rise to conflicted feelings, and it's hard go all out against the forces of darkness if you can still see the light in them. It's got magic, it's got girls, but fans of Sugar Sugar Rune know that it's already gone well past "magical girl." By Volume 3, some key events had brought the big picture into view: a political struggle between ancient magical races, a best friend's betrayal, and a heroine in search of her lineage. This follow-up volume now tries to build on that expanded world, showing Vanilla's descent into darkness and Chocolat's conflict of conscience. However, Moyoco Anno might be overstretching her ambitions here, and eventually the story falls back into episodic adventure: Chocolat faces one challenge, clears it, moves on to the next one, and so on. Yet behind the sparkly, candy-flavored façade is a dark, complex world with the potential to be more than just casting spells and chasing hearts.

Hell Girl is a fundamentally mean-spirited venture. It's a series of tales in which decent people are crapped on by some vile scumbucket until systematically backed into a corner from which their only hope for escape is supernatural intervention. Its world is populated exclusively with the nastiest, most selfish, deceitful and plain old evil specimens that humanity has to offer; fortunate developments are merely heights from which to fall, and even the kindest of people are destined to sully their souls with hatred and vengeance. Dark, pessimistic and possessed of a foul conception of human nature, the franchise is built upon the train-wreck appeal of personal disaster coupled with the vicarious thrill of watching the slimeballs responsible receive a bellyful of their own medicine. Not that that is of necessity a bad thing. It's a set-up rife with potential moral ambiguities and issues to explore, even if the stories in this volume have yet to do so. Or even try.

But the fact that the book never sees fit to point out that sending humans to hell for killing dogs is the supernatural equivalent of fighting BO with nuclear weapons is beside the point. The point is that the series thrives on darkness and pure sadistic nastiness, and the manga version simply doesn't deliver. To begin with, thirty-some-odd pages leaves scant time to build villains up to sufficiently evil heights that their downfall is in any way satisfying. The climactic moment during which the villain's true nature becomes clear and the hero is forced to resort to the offices of Ai Enma passes too quickly, and the cathartic trip to hell is never nasty or drawn out enough. And as if to execute any possible hint of sadistic horror fun that might remain, Miyuki Eto illustrates the book as if it were, of all things, a shoujo romance. That her art is overcrowded, busy and sloppily composed even by normal standards is once again beside the point. The problem is far more fundamental. Her style simply doesn't mesh with the content. Murdering an atmospheric horror tale with flowery effects, crazy shoujo layouts, big shiny eyes and lapses into uber-cute SD humor is sadism of an entirely different sort, and not one that is intended to be enjoyed.

Tadashi awakes from month-long coma to find that Tokyo has continued to rot in his absence. The fish have disintegrated from their mechanical carriages, to be replaced by gas-bloated infected humans. For those of us with such a constitution, Ito makes enjoyment easy, heaping on the putrid inventions. A slime-shooting, putrescence-powered zeppelin, a cannon where both powder and ball are corpses, piles of human flesh that pull the nearby infected into their pipe-infested depths with ghostly fingers of stinking gas, rotting lovers exacting revenge on their firm-fleshed significant others. This isn't horror intended to frighten, but to sicken. Ito reinforces his disturbingly-detailed world of dripping fleshy horrors and clouds of living, skeletal gas with an equally disgusting, yet strangely sweet sentimentality. Affections in Gyo survive the grave, inspiring devotion that cannot be deterred by the mere decaying of one's partner. Who, outside of the well-adjusted, can resist a book whose most moving moment involves zombie jealousy? A book that ends, not with a bang or a cynical sneer, but with a moment of simple, melancholy sorrow?

Every year, Japan lures millions of unsuspecting tourists to it's concrete-encased shores, tourists who come to explore it's emerald-green hills and traditional Buddhist temples, experience its towering Metropolises and mega-shopping complexes, and feel utterly out of place on its trains and in its restaurants, clubs, bars, and pubs.

Fortunately, there are hundreds of travel guides, websites, blogs, and books designed to arm the visitor to Japan with all the information he or she needs to survive the "Japan experience" and make the most of it. Unfortunately, most of that information is generic and patently obvious, and will leave you feeling, well, like an out of place tourist when you get here.

Not to worry. To combat the relative uselessness of most travel guides I've put together an Ichiban! list of Top 10 Travel Tips for visiting Japan. This list won't help you find anything or guide you around Japan in any way, but it might help you prepare yourself for what you'll find when you step off the plane, onto the train, and into the Japan they didn't tell you about.

1. Eat whatever is given to you. Don't make a face, don't wrinkle your nose, don't push it away. It's food, it's fresh, and it's different so eat it with a smile, and then quickly wash it down with whatever liquid is in reach. And if you simply can't stomach raw bits of pickled squid or rotting, slime-covered soybeans, lie and say you have an 'aller-gee'. It's the polite thing to do.

2. Smile more. Even if you're just walking down the street or sitting on the train, keep a smile (not a smirk) on your face. You're scary enough in your home town on a good day. Imagine yourself after a few days on the road in Japan, and it's easy to see why people cross the street to avoid you. Smile, and at least they'll think your mostly harmless...or possibly a Mormon.

3. Remove your shoes.

4. See point (3) above, and then remember to remove your shoes when you enter buildings and walk past those big stacks of lockers, conveniently located by most entrances, that are chalk-full of shoes just like yours--only smaller, cleaner, and probably more expensive.

5. Learn a few basic Japanese phrases before you get on the plane, and then accept the fact that you won't be able to understand the answers to any of them. But by at least saying 'sumi masen' or 'onegaishimasu' you might get some attention and understanding, and then quite possibly an answer in English.

6. Go to an onsen (hot spring) or sento (public bath), remove your clothes, and leave your shame at home. Everyone is naked under their clothes, so get over yourself and jump right in. Just remember to wash, scrub, wash again, and dry every square centimetre on, in, and between your body before you do. And if you have a tattoo, accept the fact your naked flesh might not be welcome everywhere.

7. Embrace the differences without judgement. In Japan, you will see young girls in incredibly short skirts everywhere, at all hours. You will see pornographic magazines at 7-11 and on the trains. You will be around people who smoke and drink, and then smoke and drink some more, and then fall down. Accept it, it's part of the culture and a good example of how a personally tolerant and incredibly safe society functions.

8. Do not think your are a golden God just because you may be taller than many or blonder than most, and just because many people stare at you, say hello, buy you drinks, or in the case of attractive young women, flatter you. You do not become special, more attractive, more intelligent, or drop dead sexy simply by coming to Japan. If you live here for a while, maybe. But not on your first visit.

9. Keep this in mind at all times: Japanese hosts, hostesses, friends, in-laws, grandparents, police, teachers, gangsters, school girls, and even passing strangers you end up drinking with will continually keep your glass full and you won't realize it until you've had far too much. If you don't pay attention, you'll wake up with a furry tongue and a headache the likes of which even God himself never envisioned. And no hair-of-the-dog will wipe out the acute sense of embarrassment you'll feel at being out-drank by someone twice your age--or half.

10. Never believe the people who just suffered through your extended rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" in the karaoke box when they applaud and tell you how great you sounded. You didn't. They are just being nice, Japanese-style. In truth, you will have stunk the place up and single-handedly caused a spike in the Japanese suicide rate. Don't do it.

Keep these ten simple points in mind at all times, and you'll be sure to have a great time in Japan and possibly even remember some of what you experience when you get here. And best of all, you'll realize that when it comes to travelling and experiencing a culture and country for the first time, sometimes the more you actually read, the less you actually know.

While tradition and etiquette may be a little more important in Japan then, say, lower Washington State, people are people and as a visitor you'll be expected to screw up once in a while. So relax, have a good time, and make a fool of yourself. It's inevitable.

Just don't forget to remove your shoes.

Today was a follow up visit to Himeji to check the state of the blossoms at Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden. Our previous visit to Himeji was on March 26, 2010.

April 4, 2010 - approaching full bloom (50-80%)

Himeji Castle was crowded today with people trying to get in to see the castle keep before restoration work fully begins on April 12. Around 9:30 this morning the line already stretched out to the entrance of Kokoen Garden and it was a two hour wait time just to reach the ticket gates. An additional 2.5 hours was expected to tour the keep.

The blossoms around the castle look great and are just on the verge of reaching full bloom. Today's warm sunny weather should continue over the next few days and I would expect the trees to fully open as early as tomorrow.

Many people were holding cherry blossom viewing parties under the perimeter of trees that ring the Sannomaru Hiroba field just outside the paid area of the castle. However, if you head up the steps towards the Senhime Peony Gardens you'll find an area covered in a canopy of cherry blossoms that was less crowded and looks like it's a better spot to hold a picnic.

Renovations to Himeji Castle, in which repairs will be made to the keep's roof and outer walls, are scheduled to fully begin on April 12, when the keep's interior will be closed to the public and construction of the scaffolding starts. According to a recent news article by JNTO, the scaffolding will reach the top of the stone wall by early May, cover half the keep by late June and completely cover it by late November.

Kokoen's beautiful strolling gardens each have a theme such as the pine tree garden, the flower garden, and the bamboo garden, but none of these feature cherry blossoms very prominently. You can find a few trees here and there, and you can enjoy seeing several different varieties of blossoms while walking around the gardens.

There are a couple of fixed images I have when I think about Japanese gardens. One is a bonsai tree, and the other is the art of Zen. Bonsai has become to me the definitive idea of Japanese gardening with beautiful images in small spaces. And Zen represents a Japanese garden in my mind because every Japanese garden that I have seen has had a Zen theme to it. Even the homes in Japan have a Zen theme to them, but it is in the garden that you really see the spirit of Zen and Zen design.

The first time I learned anything about Japanese gardens was when my mother, who worked in a language school, introduced me to the Japanese language professor. This gentleman spent many years in Japan studying and learning the Japanese language. In addition to learning the language, he learned a great deal about the culture of Japan, most notably for him, the gardens of Japan. He brought the concept of a Japanese garden to his home.

I was able to see a Japanese garden for myself when my mother and I were invited, along with all of the other colleagues from the language school, to his home to celebrate the birthday of this professor's first grandson. I couldn't help but notice the garden in the back, and I was immediately struck by the beauty and simplicity of the miniature Japanese garden he had created. I had no idea at the time that I was gazing upon a Japanese garden; I simply enjoyed the clean lines and delicate symmetry of this living work of art. At first, I was afraid to walk around in it, it seemed so delicate and I was afraid to disturb it.

Luckily, our host noticed how awe-struck I was, and he came to me and explained the entire concept behind the design of a tranquil Japanese garden. He explained that certain design structures are inherent in a Japanese garden, and pointed each one out to me, how rocks, water and plants are used. He had beautiful bonsai, as well as a Koi pond that represented bounty and prosperity.

I could not pull myself away from the beauty of this garden, and the master of the house had, in the space of a few hours, converted me from someone who knew nothing about Japanese gardens to someone who was convinced he had to create the beauty, simplicity and symbolism of a Japanese garden for himself. I now have a tranquil Japanese garden of my own, and am thankful to the professor for introducing me to this lovely art form.

Some notable bars include; "Hajime", one of the most popular in the Roppongi district, "GasPanic", a lively favourite amongst travellers and for the more sophisticated, the stylish "Finger" is recommended.

If natto is so, um, gross, why do the Japanese eat it? Why would anyone eat it? Well, one reason is because many actually like it! But the main reason to eat natto is that it is a rich source of protein, and among other benefits is thought to be effective in the prevention of heart attacks, strokes, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, and intestinal disease.

So if you can make it past the appearance, the smell, the stickiness, and the stringiness and still enjoy it, in Japanese natto you'll have a healthy source of food for life. And even if you can't deal with the unpleasant smell and texture, you still have options.
